Rate each individual based on the following criteria:
Level 1= No current competence, but plans exist to train the individual
Level 2= Partial Competency Level
Level 3= Good Competency Level
Level 4= Advanced / Trainer Competency Level
Understand the true capability and capacity of your team. Realise that with training you can release additional capacity into your team without necessarily incurring additional cost-to-recruit.
Identify all of your high-volume tasks and ensure there is sufficient/broad training/skill cover. Then look to mitigate any key-man dependencies e.g. tasks which only have minimal skills capability coverage.
Agree a medium-long term plan with your management, setting realistic and consistent targets for your team/s. Once you hit the target it will support any genuine requests for more resource/additional staff and support your own performance appraisal as an effective manager.
